Oakhurst Fort Worth has a small town feel with easy access to downtown

Have you heard of Oakhurst Fort Worth? I stumbled upon the aptly-named, tree-lined neighborhood a few years ago when I was driving around scoping out Fort Worth neighborhoods for an out-of-town client. It’s a lovely little pocket of charming homes built around Oakhurst Park, with giant oak trees lining the flower-named streets (Daisy, Honeysuckle, Marigold, Bluebonnet…you get the idea). It’s conveniently located in east Fort Worth off i35, giving its residents easy access to downtown, as well as quick highway access to the DFW Airport, AT&T Stadium and the newly renovated Globe Life Field in Arlington (go Rangers!). It’s also only about 35 minutes to downtown Dallas with no traffic. I recently had the opportunity to chat with a long-time Oakhurst Fort Worth resident about her family’s experience living in the close-knit community in east Fort Worth.

How would you describe Oakhurst, and what do you enjoy about living in this east Fort Worth neighborhood?

The vintage houses under the canopy of old trees, walkable streets, friendly neighbors, a diverse community. It has a small town feel that’s both welcoming and quiet (as much as any community near downtown can be!)

Describe what a typical weekend might look like for someone living in Oakhurst Fort Worth.

Oakhurst Park is at the heart of this east Fort Worth neighborhood.

Everyday, you will see people walking at all times. From families with strollers, babies, and dogs, to people using walkers and canes. The small neighborhood is anchored in the center by Oakhurst Park — a triangle of green with a new playground and basketball court. FOOP (Friends of Oakhurst Park) is active in not only keeping the park beautiful and safe, but in sponsoring several events throughout the year. Neighbors put together block activities, like “Oaktoberfest,” book clubs and kickball teams. Halloween is a wonderful time to be in the neighborhood. This year, I shut down at 8:30 after running out of over 300 pieces of candy (limited to one per trick-or-treater!) In the summer, we have a fun Fourth of July celebration with a parade and games, and we also host occasional food truck events throughout the year.

What are your favorite local restaurants?

My faves are Sikay, El Puerto, Mamma Mia, El Meson Chapin, and Pho Nam. I also want to give a shoutout to Tributary — we loved going there before it closed!
